ABOUT CYPRUS
Cyprus is the third largest Island in the Mediterranean . It is located at the Eastern end of the Med and, as a result, enjoys pretty stable weather conditions throughout the year.
The Island is approx 290km long by 85km wide. There is currently one third of the island that has been annexed by the Turkish Army. In the last couple of years there has been some relaxation in respect of access to the occupied areas of the island and local as well as foreign visitors are allowed to cross over through designated crossing points.
The UN still occupies the buffer zone and attempts to get both sides to reach a political agreement continue. This is not helped by the authorities on the Turkish held side of the zone selling Greek Cypriot Land to foreigners. There are currently cases before the courts where the legal owners of the land are seeking to remove the new owners from their property!
The weather pattern in Cyprus is pretty mild when compared to the rest of Europe . Indeed many people from Scandinavia and other countries spend the winter months in Cyprus in an effort to avoid the harsh conditions of their own winters...
The majority of Cypriots speak English as a second language. We drive on the left hand side of the road and the law is based on British Law. These points are an added bonus for those of us who do not want to live in an environment where there are too many changes that we have to adapt to!
The population of the Island is around 750,000. There are around 2 million Cypriots living around the world. Many left after the 1974 invasion of the island when they were forced to flee from their homes in the Northern part of the island.
Our weather is very good with on average 320 days of sunshine a year. The temperatures vary from location to location with Paphos district having the mildest climate of the island.
Entry into the European Union has meant that changes in the way the country operated had to change to conform with EU regulations. We convert from the Cyprus Pound to the Euro on 1 January 2008 .
If you are looking to re-locate or to purchase a holiday home, Cyprus scores well in all aspects. Low crime rate, friendly people, low cost of living and excellent weather conditions combined with the slow pace of life make the island a great destination.
